Small Black Dog is Chosen
R and I were on a business trip to France with our friends and colleagues J & M in October 2009. J showed us a picture of a lovely yellow labrador puppy on his phone. They had just reserved him to pick up when he was 8 weeks old. Our eldest daughter, Sarah, was in the market for a dog to replace her beloved rescue Labrador cross, Libby, who had died the year before, so a few phone calls later, one to Sarah and one to the breeder, and we had an appointment to view puppies the next week.
The breeder was located near Weston Super Mare where J and M live, and we live on the Surrey/Kent borders so it was quite a trek there and back for us with Sarah to choose a puppy then back again to pick it up. We met up with J and M for a coffee then followed them to the kennels. The breeder specialises in working dogs especially labs, and the puppies were all from pure working stock through and through. The parents were lovely - really nice natured dogs and full of get up and go.
Sarah did not have to choose a puppy. It chose her. A small black bitch puppy (in fact the smallest of the litter) trotted up to her and climbed on her knee (she was kneeling) and snuggled into her. They bonded straight away I think. Decision made and puppy chosen and marked with purple nail varnish on one ear to identify her. We could pick her up in four weeks!
